EMMERSION EXAM
Emmersion Exam FAQs
Exams are available in Chinese, French, German and Spanish.
Students who have prior knowledge of a language, but who do not have credit for Chinese/French/German/Spanish 1001 must take this test before registering for any course above the 1001 level. Prerequisites are strictly enforced.
No, no credit for language courses will be granted based on the results of this test. It is an exam for placement purposes only.
Students may obtain course credit in French, German or Spanish by taking the CLEP exam. This exam is administered by the University Testing Center. For more information, go to CLEP.
As of Fall 2010, the Department of World Languages & Cultures no longer grants credit by examination for intermediate competence (2001/2002) in languages that are not covered by the CLEP exam.
If you have previous language experience in these languages and seek placement into a higher level than 1001, please contact the appropriate instructor here.
Advanced Placement (AP), College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) tests are accepted at Georgia State University: Official test scores and/or IB transcripts should be mailed directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for review. Questions regarding credit awards should be directed to Admissions. Not all exams are accepted. Please see the online Undergraduate Catalog for a full list of accepted exams. If you have taken any of these tests, please consult with an advisor before registering for classes. Failure to do so may result in you repeating a course for which you have earned credit.
Please be advised that if you decide to take the exam more than once, only your first score will be counted.
When the test is completed, you will be given your score and a recommendation for a class level. Your score will be emailed to you, as well. Please print a copy for your records and for academic advisement purposes.
Your score will remain valid for one year from the date of the exam.
The Department of World Languages & Cultures automatically receives a copy of your score. There is no need to contact us. Please allow three business days for us to process your results. You will only be cleared to register for the level at which you place. For example, if you scored a 350 on the Spanish exam, you can only register for SPAN 2001, not SPAN 1002.
0-199 CHIN/FREN/GRMN/SPAN 1001
200-299 CHIN/FREN/GRMN/SPAN 1002
300-399 CHIN/FREN/GRMN/SPAN 2001
400-499 CHIN/FREN/GRMN/SPAN 2002
You will receive an e-mail confirming this placement and that you have been cleared to register for that level. 500+ Secondary placement is required and you will receive an e-mail from the department. You should also consider taking the CLEP Exam for a chance to earn up to six credit hours levels 2001 & 2002 for FREN/GRMN/SPAN. Please note: this placement exam does not override a previous grade in a language course. Students must receive a C or better to continue on to the next level. The Emmersion Exam cannot override this requirement.

- Reasons to take the Placement Exam early:
All BA degrees carry a world language requirement. It is best to take care of this requirement sooner rather than later so you are not worrying about the language requirement in your last semester. This would endanger your likelihood of graduating in a timely manner. - By placing into the level appropriate to your abilities, you will avoid taking (and paying for) credits that are not necessary for you to enroll in.
- If you think about world languages early in your time at Georgia State, you can maximize your Area H electives to get a minor in a world language. A minor in a world language complements a major in any discipline, be it social sciences, natural sciences, business, medicine, law or humanities. And a minor in a language will make you more competitive when you are looking for a job after graduation.
